There's a barnful of information on this page. Why? We're parents too, and these are the things we'd like to know before we registered our triathlete for a race. And, we've organized it all on one page so there's no need to click around to find what you're looking for.

Course Description

The swim takes place in the Nottingham Swim Club's 25 meter, six lane, outdoor pool. The bike course is a two mile out-and-back through the rolling hills of the Nottingham community. The run course is relatively flat and fast along a combination of sidewalk and grass with a cross country style finish.

Our pool deck is super family-friendly, there's excellent spectator viewing all around the transition area, and the finish line is just steps from there.

USA Triathlon Sanctioned Event

The Nottingham Kids Triathlon is a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Event (234063). This sanctioning signifies that USA Triathlon has reviewed and approved our swim, bike and run courses, our plans for medical, emergency, safety and volunteer support, and our agreement to conduct the event according to the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules, including USAT's Supplemental Youth Rules. The Supplemental Youth Rules were put into effect in January 2012 with the goal of improving safety, fairness and consistency.

USA Triathlon Youth Membership Required

Participants must be USAT youth members. If your triathlete's membership has expired, expires before race day, or he/she is not a USAT youth member, you may renew or purchase a youth membership at the time of registration. An annual (12 calendar months) USAT youth membership is now only $10 and includes these benefits.

USA Triathlon Age Group Competition Rule in Effect

The Nottingham Kids Triathlon follows USA Triathlon's age group competition rule. Triathletes compete based upon their age on December 31 of the year of the event. For example, the event is August 27, your triathlete is 10 on the date of the event but turns 11 before or on December 31. His/her race age is 11 and he/she would compete in the 11–12 age group. We'll automagically place your triathlete in the correct age group based on the gender and birthdate you enter, so there's nothing for you to think about—aside from entering the correct gender and birthdate (it's happened). Your triathlete needs to know his/her race age and age group and complete the corresponding swim, bike, and run distances (see below).

Age Groups and Swim, Bike and Run Distances

Born in 2008, 2009: 7–8 age group: 50 meter swim, 2 mile bike, .5 mile run
Born in 2006, 2007: 9–10 age group: 100 meter swim, 2 mile bike, .5 mile run
Born in 2004, 2005: 11–12 age group: 100 meter swim, 4 mile bike, 1 mile run
Born in 2001, 2002, 2003: 13–15 age group: 150 meter swim, 6 mile bike, 1 mile run

USA Triathlon Bicycle Equipment Rules

The Nottingham Kids Triathlon will follow all USAT Competitive Rules including USAT's Supplemental Youth Rules. Please note, "Bicycles may be on-road, off-road or youth style. The bicycle shall have two wheels. No training wheels are allowed." Also, "Only standard drop, straight, or curved handlebars are allowed. No aero or time trial bars may be attached to the bike or used during competition" and "No time trial, 'chrono,' or 'aero helmets' with a tail may be used."

Age Group Awards and Post Race

The Nottingham Kids Triathlon will award first, second, and third place across four age groups for both girls and boys. Each triathlete will receive a commemorative Nottingham Kids Triathlon race tee and finisher's medal, be eligible for our popular themed door prizes, and enjoy healthy post race snacks and hydration.

Triathlete (and Parent) Guide

Our 20 page Triathlete Guide is chock full of important pre-race and race day information. In it you’ll find information about packet pick up, the swim, bike and run courses, results and awards, and everything in between. Download the Guide

Day Before (Friday) Packet Pick Up

Packet pick up will take place on Friday, August 26 from 4–8 p.m. at the Nottingham Swim Club, 1104 Kingsbridge Terrace, Mount Airy, MD. All triathletes must pick up their packets on Friday.

Day of (Saturday) Bike Racking

Bike racking will be the morning of the race. Transition will be open to triathletes only (see below).

Transition Area

Based on feedback from staff, volunteers and parents after our Columbia Association Kids Triathlon on July 24, we are making two changes to our Nottingham Kids Triathlon transition area. First, each triathlete will have an assigned transition space. Second, parents will not be allowed inside transition prior to the race—volunteers will assist triathletes with finding and setting up their transition area if necessary.

Typical Race Day Schedule

6:30 a.m. Transition opens (triathletes only), bike racking, body marking
8 a.m. First wave
8:30 a.m. First triathlete crosses finish line
9:40 a.m. Last triathlete starts bike
9:55 a.m. Last triathlete starts run
10 a.m. Last triathlete crosses finish line
10:15 a.m. Awards and door prizes

All times are estimates and subject to change. Please note that all triathletes must set up their transition area and have their body marked by 7:30 a.m. regardless of what time their swim wave starts. Triathletes may not remove their bikes or gear from the transition area until the last triathlete has started the run. This is in the interest of safety and good sportsmanship. It’s also a rule.

Refund and Cancelation Policies

There are no refunds, deferments, or transfers of registrations. That said, we're parents too and we know life happens. You may cancel your triathlete's registration for any reason up to 21 days before the event date and receive a discount code valued at 50% of the registration fee paid (excluding USA Triathlon youth membership and/or registration transaction fees). This discount code may be applied towards a future Mini Cow Tri event within 12 months of the original event date.

Race management reserves the right to modify or cancel the race for safety reasons. In the event the race is canceled, there are no refunds.
